In November 2012, I found myself overweight and my health wasn’t the best either. I had always been active, but due to the weight gain over the years, my health was spiraling out of control. I was facing numerous medications to control high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. After meeting with my doctor and listening to his concerns, I knew then I must do something to gain my health back. In January 2013, my New Year’s Resolution was to begin a new fitness program. I also made a promise to myself that I can’t control my genetics, but I could control my weight, fitness and eating habits.
After taking one of Sarah’s Body Pump classes at Empire Fitness, she invited me to try a CrossFit class. I will be honest, it wasn’t an easy decision to make when you’re over weight and worried if you could even make it through the Crossfit WOD. Signing up for the CrossFit 101 class in Jaurary 2013, was one of the best decisions of my life. To say that CrossFit has changed my life is an understatement. It has transformed my mind and body from an unhappy, frumpy, overweight mom to some sort of super hero who can do just about anything (Or at least that’s how I feel.) Two years later, and more than 60 lbs gone, I feel like a whole new person. I am down 4 pants sizes and 11.7% percent body fat. However, it isn’t what I have lost, but what I have also gained…….CONFIDENCE. I am now more motivated than ever to continue on my fitness/weight loss journey. I attend CrossFit classes 5-6 days a week and eat a Paleo diet about 80% of the time.
My favorite WOD’s are those that incorporate cardio and weight lifting. I never knew how much I could love Olympic lifting and each time I PR on something, I think about the old me and how far I have come. CrossFit encompasses many physical skills and a few are cardiovascular, strength, stamina and flexibility. Obtaining these skills has allowed me to see changes in my body on a daily basis. I constantly amaze myself and love the person I have become through CrossFit.
At CrossFit Madison, we’re family. We always support each other no matter if we finish a WOD first or last. We encourage each other to not give up and finish strong. I have made great friends and the staff is awesome. The coaches and athletes are supportive and provide encouragement in every single WOD. They are the reason I have been so successful and the main reason I keep coming back day in and day out no matter how sore or tired I am. If you’re ready to make a change, stop making excuses and make the commitment to join CrossFit to get into the best shape of your life.
